Whey Protein Side Effects, Important Facts You Need to Know about this Supplement

Although whey protein is an excellent source of lean protein and other nutrition, it is still vital for us to truly understand everything about it to maximize effectiveness.  Apart from all its benefits, there are some probable side effects of whey protein that we have to be conscious of to avoid negative health effects. In order to make use of its full potential, there are five fundamental traits we need to realize about whey protein.

Firstly, consuming too much of something is never a good idea. Consuming exceeding amounts of whey protein can ultimately led to the first whey protein side effect, which is liver problem.  High whey protein consumption in an extended period of time can put unnecessary tension on the liver, which would ultimately lead to other health problems that is related to the fatigued liver. This is definitely very dangerous because the liver is the most important part of the body following the heart.

Moreover, people with high sensitivity lactose level or people who are lactose intolerant could experience various levels of allergies if consume whey protein. However, there is a way to avoid this second whey protein side effect. In the market for whey protein, there are two main types, isolated whey protein and whey protein concentrated. People who are lactose intolerant are recommended to take isolate whey protein instead, due to the fact that it only contains 1% lactose comparing to the 5% in the latter.

Furthermore, consuming whey protein in a long period of time might be linked to the degeneration of the kidney. However, there are still no real evident that this is true. Therefore, if you are planning to take whey protein, it is a good idea to be cautious about the amount you are consuming. Remember too much of something good is never good.

The fourth side effect of whey protein is that if taken excessively over long period of time, the consumer has an increased possibility of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease adhering to our bones; it is when our bones become weak which makes it easier to break. Although there is no experiment or research to prove this claim, it is important that you are aware of it since many experts have advocated this theory.

Finally, the last side effect that could be caused by whey protein consumption is the increased possibility of experiencing various allergies that are not caused by lactose. The symptoms include rash, swelling of mouth or lips, hives, itching and so on. In the worse case, you may experience diarrhea  or vomiting. These are quite serious problems and I advise you to seek medical attention right away. Therefore, to avoid these side effects, I advise you to check and make sure that you do not have any serious personally illness or allergies before consuming whey protein.

In conclusion, whey protein is a very prominent supplement, but it can give you negative effects if not used properly. Taking too much of it can be more than detrimental to your health. People who are lactose intolerant should also choose the right whey protein formula. And It may also cause allergies or osteoporosis.  Lastly, for those of you who wants to gain muscle mass fast and are afraid of taking supplements or do not want to waste great fortune on them, I do have a way out for you.

Introduction to Whey Protein Side Effects

Whey protein is a protein obtained from whey, a byproduct of cheese made from cow’s milk. The protein is a combination of beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin and albumin, together with the pH. Serum was credited with having the highest biological value (BV) of a protein known. The protein of whey is digested easily and also coincided with the important disease-fighting effects. Whey protein powder is very popular among bodybuilders and athletes since it accelerates the process of muscle development and also helps in faster recovery.

Side Effects of Whey Protein
There was considerable debate about the side effects of whey protein. While experts have warned about the side effects of excessive consumption of protein, there has been no scientific evidence to date to demonstrate the negative effects. However, there is a list of potential side effects of whey protein.

Whey protein is derived from whey, which is a byproduct of cheese made from cow’s milk. Thus, those who are allergic to lactose, or suffer from lactose intolerance may develop an allergic reaction to it.
It has been argued that long-term consumption of proteins (or milk or any other) is associated with renal failure.
Experts also warned that excessive consumption of protein can cause liver damage.
Last but not least, the protein has been linked to the cause of osteoporosis, especially in the long term.

In conclusion, too much of any particular thing is never good and the same applies in the case of whey protein as well. Moderation is the key to healthy living and you have to keep that in mind, while eating anything, including whey protein.

Whey Protein Side Effects

Is there scientific evidence of whey protein side effects?

Whey protein is in simple terms liquid globular part of milk. It is obtained when cheese is separated from milk. Whey protein is commercially used as food supplement especially among body builders. The protein can also be used to manage protein malnutrition condition and other immune deficiencies. This is because whey protein supplement is rich in proteins, mineral salts and residual lactose. Proteins are the component of food that is used to build or repair body cells. It is the primary input in growth and development.

Proteins are large molecules which can be broken down to peptides, and further into amino acids. There are twenty amino acids that are used in formation of body parts. There are however only a few essential amino acids. Essential amino acids refer to those amino acids that cannot be manufactured by the body from other acids. The amino acids metabolism results in production of a number of metabolites that may also have side effects.

Whey proteins side effects have been investigated by several nutritional and biochemical experts. The most comprehensive pre-clinical studies have been conducted on rodents serving as guinea pigs. These studies focused on identifying whey protein side effects arising from the byproducts of its metabolism. Naturally, any protein molecule ingested is taken through the protein metabolism cycle that begins at the mouth with release of proteases. The byproducts include the carbohydrate skeletal structure, some fatty acids and peptides. The peptides are further broken down into amino acids. Some of the amino acids may form compounds with other amino acids, carbon structures and fatty acids to generate free radicals that produce negative side effects. However, every metabolism process that is aimed at releasing energy through the ATP pump, will inevitably release free radicals. The formation of undesired compounds and release of free radicals is what may be considered whey protein side effect.

Whey protein has been thought to inhibit the functions of glutathione peptide. It causes whey protein side effect by inhibiting the functions of glutathione as an anti-oxidant. The absorption of free radicals in the cell environment is therefore inhibited. Free radicals may cause side effects by ‘punching holes’ on other cell membranes.

The result of pre-clinical studies on rodents did not reveal adequate evidence to substantiate the claim that whey protein may cause side effects of the same magnitude in humans.

In conclusion, there is no substantive evidence to link whey protein supplement to side effects. It is a safe product for body builders and patients of malnutrition.

Mechanism of Whey Protein Side Effect Function

Whey protein is a selected component of fresh milk that is isolated through a simple centrifugal process. To get large quantities that are commercial viable, whey protein is produced as a byproduct in cheese production. Whey protein is largely composed of pure protein. It is one of the two proteins in milk, with the other sister protein being casein. The benefits of whey protein are best utilized in the food supplement industries. This is a multi-million dollar industry whose product finds utility in both developed and developing countries. Among the more affluent population, whey protein supplement are mostly preferred by body builders who are conscious of their shapes and weight. Where resources including food are limited, the whey protein supplement is used an immune booster or in management of malnourished persons.

whey-protein-side-effectsA few users of whey protein supplement have reported experiencing allergic reactions. These are popularly referred to as whey protein side effects. These allergic reactions have in some cases been associated indiscriminately with the whey protein ingestion and metabolism. An understanding of the mechanisms by which whey protein side effects could occur is a first step towards informing a user of whey protein supplement.

Two byproducts of whey digestion and cellular metabolism are lactose and lactalbumin. Lactalbumin is a protein molecule that can further be broken down to amino acids. Metabolism of the peptides and amino acids lead to inhibition of the function of other peptides such as glutathione. Glutathione is a tripeptide that includes a sulphur bridge and long glutamate amino acid structure. Its structure is ideal as an anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants are the free radical sinks and protect the cell membranes from damage. Glutathione also serves as an anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory substance. The suspected whey protein side effects are also dependant on other health status indices of an individual. Where an individual feeds on adequate alternative sources of anti-oxidant such as vitamin C and vitamin E, the chances of side effects are significantly reduced from whey protein side effects.

Although whey protein is suspected of causing the side effects, its sister protein casein is a major cause of the allergic reaction. A purer whey protein achieved all the way through thorough separation procedures would have minimal whey protein side effects.

The health benefits of whey protein also far outweigh the limited side effects. Moreover, whey protein side effects can be significantly reduced by purification and increased uptake of anti-oxidants.

Best Protein Supplement For a Healthy Life

A supplement is a compound administered through ingestion or injection to a mineral, vitamin or protein deficient individual. Protein supplements are as important as the vitamin or minerals food supplements. The role of proteins in the body is so important that a lack of it would lead to serious paralysis of a human body functions. Almost every activity in the body is performed by a cell that has a protein as its integral part. While energy is required by the body as a fuel for the function of the cells, the actual vehicles that coordinate communication and reactions are the proteins. Some of the functions coordinated by proteins in human body include enzymes formations, formation of anti-bodies, formation of hormones, transport of molecules, pathogens and oxygen across cell membranes. About a third of human body is made from proteins.
Lack of proteins in the body would require provision of exogenous proteins. This is referred to as protein supplements. Naturally, the body will breakdown a protein molecule, disperse the amino acids and utilize the genomic coded message to assemble new proteins that it requires. The body may however be unable to get all the required raw materials for production of certain specialized proteins or body parts. This often occurs where essential amino acids are inadequate in supplies.
The best protein supplement is one which will meet all the needs of the body. This includes providing for immunity, protein transport systems such as those of hemoglobin and body building blocks. It should be able to meet the needs of protein users who deplete their reserves quickly such as infants, expectant mothers, recovering mother and athletes.
Such best protein supplement should be rich in essential amino acids to bridge the deficiencies in production of proteins that perform essential functions. Some of the functions of proteins that are necessary for life include repair of muscles, enzyme and hormone functions, muscle contraction and nutrient transport, formation of body parts such as nails and hair. Proteins destined for each of the functions require an assembly of specialized or essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are 8 in number out of the twenty two amino acids. They are essential because the body cannot manufacture them from existing body substrates. They have to be obtained form exogenous sources. For example, cysteine amino acid contains the sulphur brigdeg necessary for formation of nails and hair. A best protein supplement meant to boost hair growth should therefore be rich in cystein.
In conclusion, a best protein supplements must have good quality, highly bio-available and bridges the gap in dietary protein supply for the consumer.

The Benefits of Whey Protein

The benefits of whey protein are not among the latest discoveries. Whey protein has been known for its health rejuvenating benefits across several generations. In some traditional societies, it has been used as a medicine because of its ill-health management properties. Long before food supplements came to the market, the benefits of whey protein has been harnessed to improve the well being of individuals.

Traditionally and in modern households, whey protein has been used as food additive. This is due to the rancid taste associated with cheese flavor. This unique taste has been used to improve taste of foods, especially vegetables.

The benefits of whey protein are however most appreciated in the medical field. The specializations that have interest in the medicinal value of whey protein include nutritionists, physiotherapists, pharmacologists, physiologists, pediatrics. Each of these specialists harness the benefits of whey protein related to various properties of the protein components.

Whey protein supplements are composed of various components such as lactalbulin, lactoglobulin, immunoglobulin, lactoferrins, lactoperoxide and bovine serum albumin. These proteins serve various purposes in the metabolism, hormonal balance and disease prevention.

Pediatrics would recommend infant and child patients to tap from the benefits of whey protein supplements. Colostrum is the first milk produced by a mother after a day or two upon parturition. It is also referred to as the ‘immune milk’ because of its anti-biotic qualities. Whey protein supplements have several similar proteins as colostrums. They are both rich in anti-bodies called immunoglobulin (Ig). These include IgA, IgM and IgG. These act as binding factors for bacteria and other pathogens. Therefore whey protein when given to infants in appropriate dosage, is ideal for disease prevention.

Physiologists and physicians draw from the benefit of whey protein as raw materials for formation of antioxidant. Anti-oxidants are molecules in the body that absorb free radicals produced as a result of cellular activities. Free radicals are dangerous to the other cells since they penetrate cell membranes and destroy them. Whey protein contains a cystein and glutathione amino acids. These are also used to form the anti-oxidants.

Sports men and women, including body builders are the greatest benefactors as whey protein acts as best bodybuilding supplements. The ingestion of whey protein supplements by athletes leads to faster growth of muscles. This reason for which they work as the best bodybuilding supplements is because the whey protein supplement provides additional protein to be used as building blocks in muscle repair and formation.

Whey protein is of huge benefits to people of various ages, conditions and profession. It is a supplement of the future.

Whey Protein supplement – Who Needs It Most?

Whey protein supplement is a special molecule that is ingested either in liquid form or tablet form. It is a compound of various whey protein components that play a role in transporting water soluble vitamins as well as acts as a resistance coat. Whey protein supplement is useful for everyone and anyone. It is not only meant for the unhealthy persons.

A healthy individual would benefit from the various characteristics of whey protein supplement. Alpha-lactalbulin is one such example of a compound in whey protein supplement. This compound contains essential amino acid known as tryptophan which aids in regulation of sleep and mood improvement by releasing happy or relaxing hormones. Alpha-lactalbulin is the only such protein which also plays a role in binding of calcium.

Infants can benefit specially from whey protein supplement. The major component of whey protein is colostrum. Colostrum is the protein that is important at birth and provides much of an infant’s nutrition. The protein provides immunity to infants and others health benefits.

In metabolism, whey protein supplements play an integral role. Beta lactoglobulin which makes up the largest proportion binds fat soluble vitamins. This is important for hydrophilic vitamins that would be attracted to water component of the cells and fail to cross cell membranes. The beta lactoglobulin part of the whey protein supplement almost literary wraps the vitamin and transports it across a cell membrane.

Glumacrypeptide (GMP) is useful for prevention of dental caries, including dental plaques and cavities. It is a peptide which does not have the phenylalnine and therefore can be administered to PKU amino acid disorder.

From this brief analysis of a few components of the whey protein, it is evident that the benefits of whey protein supplements are relevant to various categories of people and conditions. It is useful to children, adults who want to have healthy life, people suffering from insomnia and anxiety, and also for those who are interested to improve their metabolism rate.

Therefore whey protein supplement is useful to all, both the healthy and unhealthy. It is recommended for general growth and development. The manufacturing process of whey protein supplements is controlled to ensure that the protein digestibility with corrected amino acid score meets the USDA score. This also means that the protein efficiency is high and it is bio-available.

Whey protein supplement will find use in the hospital, gym, sports, special care clinics for disorders such as anxiety and any protein deficiency care units. It is safe, effective and recommended by experts.

Whey Protein Supplement – When Does One Need Whey Protein Supplements?

Proteins are essential building blocks of human body. They are built from unit molecules called amino acids and secondary units called peptides. The human body requires certain minimum ratio of protein to body mass to function effectively and efficiently. They serve as a body building molecules. Amino acids used in the building block of the proteins are obtained from plant and animal sources. Animal sources are considered a better quality protein because of the biological availability, protein efficacy, and a higher protein amino acid score. Animal proteins also have a larger proportion of the essential amino acids. Essential amino acids are those that the human body cannot manufacture and must be obtained from external sources. A perfect example is whey protein supplements.

Certain components of the human body would not play their roles in the event of protein malnutrition. Infants for example who do not obtain colostrum from the mother is likely to be infected by several diseases. The brain for example, will perform at a less normal level in the absence of adequate proteins. This can lead to memory lapses or poor intellectual abilities. Proteins are used for repairing cells and in building new blocks. Where a human body is injured, the restoration of the body parts such as broken skin normally requires supply of proteins. In view of the various roles of protein, any deficiency of protein would need to be corrected through provision of protein supplement.

Proteins get depleted through a number of processes. In the absence of adequate protein in the diet, the body converts protein from the body cells to supply other growing parts. Some health conditions contribute to protein depletion due to the imbalance between intake and use.

Whey protein supplements are additional forms of easily digestible milk proteins. Whey protein supplements contain all the beneficial components of milk.  The benefits include supply of mineral acids, fatty acids and protein in the form of large peptide compounds. The peptides are unique and each play special functions. These include bête-lactoglobulin which transports water soluble vitamins, alpha-lactalbulin which binds calcium, and many others.

Whey protein supplement are, therefore, not aimed at replacing the body’s protein but increasing their bio-availability. Use of protein supplement should not be for a long period, they only serve as short term problems.

Whey protein supplement are important for healthy living. They should, however, be taken only when the body is in critical need so as to avoid side effects.

Bulking up to Slim Down: Whey Protein and Looking Great

Many people think that the scale and dropping a pant size have a simple relationship.   If the scale show a smaller number than before, your pant size will drop – right?  Not necessarily.   Your body shape doesn’t have a direct relationship with your actual body weight: one pound of slim, toned muscle takes up less volume than one pound of fat.   This means that two people with the same number on the scale can have drastically different body shapes and sizes.   Someone with toned muscles will fit their clothes better and take up less space than someone with flabby or fatty muscles.   If you only cut calories to lose weight and neglect your muscle training, you may not get the shape you want; weight training exercise is important as well.  However, not all exercise is created equally.   While doing cardiovascular activities (cardio) will help burn calories, the key to a trim body is developing lean muscle.   In fact, cardio isn’t even the only way to burn calories!  Muscle mass will burn more calories per day than fat mass: thus the more muscle you pack on the more calories your body burns each day, doing nothing.   Since twenty to thirty minutes of cardio is all you really need to develop a healthy heart; spend the rest of your gym time building and toning your muscles.   Just be careful to alternate different muscle groups on different gym days to avoid injury. Another benefit of developing lean muscle is that it will increase your metabolism.   Studies have shown that people with more lean muscle have a higher resting metabolism, which in turn helps you burn fat faster.   In fact, as you grow older, your muscle mass will break down over time.   In turn this will slow your metabolism and help create a flabby and sagging appearance.   In order to counteract that aspect of aging, you need to develop a good metabolism and maintain toned muscles. Finally, don’t just exercise harder – exercise smarter.   Taking a whey protein supplement can expand the impact of your weight training workout.   Muscles are made up of protein, so adding it to your diet can help repair damage that occurs during weight training as well as by providing the building blocks necessary to develop new muscle.   This will help tone and define your muscles while helping prepare them for the next workout.   Whey protein is a better choice than soy protein for adding to weight training; because it is more concentrated.   Whey protein is also dairy based, and is easier for your body to break down and absorb.   You can take less and feel more of an impact using whey protein.  If you want to slim down into your favorite pair of jeans, the weight loss key isn’t to cut calories or do a ton of cardio: instead develop lean muscle mass.   Work those muscles out and do it smarter: take whey protein after every workout.

Weight loss motivators (weight loss and whey protein)

You want to lose weight, but you have not been successful in the past.   You are lacking the motivation to keep the weight loss program going.   Maybe it is because you don’t see the results you are looking for.   Weight loss is a process that does not happen in one week like some programs claim.   They may offer fast results, but those results usually don’t last long.   There are three things you can do to get the results to stay motivated to the end.   Make sure you are eating a diet that is low in fat and calories.   In addition to a good diet you should drink a lot of water.   Specifically, to keep you motivated to go to keep exercising, get a workout buddy or create a motivating workout soundtrack. A good diet consists of eating foods that are low in fats, calories, carbohydrates, sodium, and sugar.   These are things that can destroy your diet.   Good diets will have the essential vitamins and minerals you need.   You also want to think about portion control.   Over eating is one of the causes of not losing weight.   In addition to portion control, you should eat more fiber and protein.   A good way to increase protein is taking a whey protein supplement.   Whey protein supplements provide protein that your body uses to create lean muscles.   Lean muscle continues to burn calories even after you are done exercising.   The best whey protein to take is an isolate mixture, which is 90% pure protein and has fewer fats and carbohydrates than other protein sources.   Whey protein is also easier to digest because it is dairy based.  Drinking more water is essential to losing weight.   Studies have shown that if a person wants to lose weight, they need to drink more than a gallon of water a day.   Contrary to popular belief drinking this much water will not make you retain water and gain water weight.   Drinking water flushes out the toxins in your body.   It also flushes out the fat cells that your body is burning when you exercise.   Drinking water also helps your skin stay hydrated and youthful.   When you don’t drink enough water, you body goes into a “starvation” mode and will keep and store any water you drink to keep your body functioning properly. Another great way to stay motivated is to find someone to be a workout buddy.   A workout buddy is someone who will go to the gym with you or who will exercise with you.   They can be someone to call you in the morning to get you out of bed to go running.   Classes offered at the gym are another way to have “workout buddies. ”  The people who are there all have a common goal: to get fit.   They are free to members.   There are a wide variety of classes offered: yoga, Pilates, cardio, stretching, weight training, cycling, and many others.   If you can’t find a workout buddy creating a stimulating soundtrack is a good alternative.   When creating a playlist start with songs that are slower so you can get warmed up.   Then increase the tempo of the music to give you a good cardio or training section.   It is also important to end with songs with a slower tempo so you can cool down.  Eating a proper diet with added protein, drinking water, and getting a workout buddy is a good way to stay motivated to get the results you want while losing weight.
